Whoa there, Google what?

Google Glass, in case you missed Diane von Furstenberg’s spring 2012 fashion show at New York Fashion Week, is the world’s first production ready, personal augmentation device. Its also classified as a HMD or head-mounted display, according to Google’s book of abbreviations.

Form wise, Google Glass is a slim-lined headset designed to both connect you to the world, and akin you to a cyborg at the same time. Within the tiny frame, an Android powered operating system offers features such voice recognition and search, 720p image and video recording, Google maps and directions, a contact book, a calendar and share functionality. Google Glass could essentially be labelled the world’s first ‘smart-glasses’. In fact, I might go ahead and do just that.

Reason 1 to anticipate: Film pointless endeavours

Holy crap its like wearing a GoPro all day, further tempting me to undertake ridiculous feats such as parkour in every day situations.

Reason 2 to anticipate: I am from the future

I’m a bit of a futurist, everything I’ve heard about it sounds fairly dapper (utopia, cheap synthesised steak, the NBN et al). Wearing Google Glass will most likely dupe some people, if not many, into believing that you have actually transcended through time and are there to enlighten their mediocre 21st century lives.

Reason 3 to anticipate: I look like a cyborg

I always wanted to see other human’s power levels just by looking at them.

Reason 1 to loathe: I look like an idiot

There are two types of people who will initially purchase this product; yuppies and tech-heads. Both, will have little reason to purchase it other than film boring things like their vegetarian macro-food lunch.

Reason 2 to loathe: Privacy

There is no way to identify whether the yuppie who is staring at you from across the vegetarian macro-food restaurant, is recording you. Scary thought eh? Back to my lunch.

Reason 3 to loathe: Apple

In 2 years time, Apple will release the iSpecs, which will be critically acclaimed as revolution in personal device and fashion. We’ll all have to deal with it people.
